Film Center announces first live music event, Latif Bolat, Nov. 15 at 7pm
Pickford Film Center (PFC) is pleased to announce their first dedicated music concert, with Latif Bolat, performing November 15 at 7pm. Bolat is a singer and accompanies himself on the traditional Turkish stringed instrument known as a "baglama." Other traditional acoustic Turkish instruments that might be seen at PFC include the frame drum, ney flute, kanun, violin and oud.
“We have long imagined our new space delivering more than movies,” says Michael Falter, Program Director for the organization. “As a music fan, I believe Bellingham serves many genres well with other venues--but we are missing a modest sized house that can serve world, jazz, or classical musicians with an audience that prefers sitting and a prompt start time.”
After first hearing Bolat’s music, who has performed in Bellingham before, Falter was excited to experiment with live music. “I love music from other cultures. He was traveling to Bellingham and looking for a venue--why not PFC?”
An important part of Latif Bolat’s presentation is Turkish devotional poetry from the 13th century mystics Rumi and Yunus Emre as well as later Turkish mystic poets, which Bolat weaves throughout the program. In addition to spoken elaboration, slides are used to create a complete experience by providing scenes of the Turkish countryside, cities, artwork, architecture, and people. This provides a deeper understanding of the culture by combining the musical presentation with images of its origin.
Tickets can be purchased at either PFC or Limelight locations, or online via PFC’s website. Prices: $10 for PFC Members, $15 for Non-Members. Event will take place at Pickford Film Center located at 1318 Bay Street in downtown Bellingham.
