DOCTOBER, OFFICIAL SELECTION. PRESENTED BY WHATCOM HUMANE SOCIETY Amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Stas Kapralov’s parents found themselves having to evacuate in a hurry. With them was Stas’ dog, Nika, who, frightened by the noise and chaos, ran away and had to be left behind, a fate that befalls many animals during wartime or amid natural disasters. Stas made the risky decision to return to the warzone to find Nika, and, in doing so, meets volunteers who put their lives on the line to rescue abandoned animals and bring them to safety. Finding new purpose, he joins them in their remarkable effort to make sure no animal is left behind. Playing with Short: SAVE THE CATE (24 mins) In a similar vein is this short film, the remarkable true story of a community of strangers from across the world who came together to help reunite a Ukrainian refugee family in California with the cat they were forced to leave behind.
