Alfred Hitchcock Presents

Quote

“Making a film means, first of all, to tell a story.

That story can be an improbable one, but it should never be banal.

It must be dramatic and human. What is drama, after all, but life with the dull bits cut out?” –Alfred Hitchcock

Description

Welcome to the wonderful world of Alfred Hitchcock, the “Master of Suspense” himself.

Once a month on Sunday afternoons starting in January of 2025 and running through October 2025, we’ll be screening a selection of nine Hitchcock films with an introduction to each film provided by Pickford Program Director, Melissa Tamminga.

The films Hitch made--with their delightfully morbid and cheeky sense of humor, their gripping horror and suspense, the propulsive narratives, and the wonderfully memorable characters played by some of Hollywood’s greatest actors --immediately won over audiences and achieved fabulous commercial success in their day. And so joining us on this journey through his films will be, first and foremost, deliciously entertaining.

But Hitch’s films are more than just entertainment, too. As film scholars and critics eventually came to recognize, his films held not just commercial and popular appeal but undeniable artistic rigor, technical innovative genius, dizzying psychological complexity, and mesmerizing thematic richness--things that ultimately have made him one of the most admired and most imitated directors of all-time. And so this will be a journey of discovery, too, and an opportunity for rich conversations.

While Hitchcock’s extensive artistic career began in the silent era in Germany and England, we’ll begin our series with his first American film, the grand and lush Rebecca (1940) and move from there in chronological order, ending with the iconic and terrifying The Birds (1963).

Stay tuned for the full line-up in coming weeks!
