The Strike

DOCTOBER, OFFICIAL SELECTION. IN-PERSON Q&A W/ FILMMAKER AND PROTAGONISTS ON OCT. 5 This is the remarkable story of how inmates at California’s Pelican Bay prison ignited a hunger strike that spread to prisons across California, eventually involving 30,000 inmates and leading to widespread reform. When it was built, Pelican Bay was considered a model “supermax” prison—ultra-secure and made to house the worst offenders. What it ended up being was an inhumane hellhole where inmates were housed in solitary confinement, many for decades. Despite having limited contact with each other and no contact with the outside world, the inmates were still able to somehow spearhead a strike, changing the system from the inside out.DocumentaryPT1H26M2024-10-05
